I am trying to change my diet for the better. I have been eating loads
of fish, but wondered if anyone has any advice for other foods I can
eat. I am concerned with fiber and protein. And, I love pasta!

Left?  No, I'm in here as you can see. In afp.
Summer?  Yes it was good.
Lots of parties, Elly's birthday (June) split in two days, and my day
(August) as well. Because  lack of space for all guests at the same time.

Too much of a good thing is just as bad....less fish..try beans, brown
rice...stir fries with veggies are a good thing..try whole grain pastas and
breads...

whole grain pasta, since you love it so much (i love it too-- my
favorite food aside from strawberries)
spinach and other leafy greens
berries-- high in antioxidants
rolled oats or steel-cut oats
almonds
olive oil
cottage cheese (for protein)

with splenda or add fruit

I sweeten my oatmeal with my son's home-produced honey.  :)
Egg whites are fine; for an omelet add onion, green pepper and soy or
veggie cheese.  My doctor recommends fish, chicken and turkey. Use skim
milk or soy or rice milk. If you must have bread, eat whole wheat
bread.  I try to find bread without corn syrup.  There are whole wheat
pastas in the stores but it is best to avoid excess carbohydrates.
Avoid potatoes, white breads, sugar - as in cookies and candy.  A
little to sweeten coffee won't hurt and is better for you than
aspertame or artificial sweeteners.  If you're eating animal protein,
don't eat beans, peas and lentils...the exception - green beans are
alright.
Norma - who should practice what she preaches.  :)

According to a nutritionist I know, they are high calorie.  Also was
told to avoid carrots and beets because of the sugar content.
Otherwise all the veggies you can manage are good.  :)  For a six week
period I had no fruit or fruit juices, also because of the sugar
content.  Then, finding out how easy it was to lose weight, I went back
to my old eating habits and gained it all back.

This sounds like what people on very low carb diets are told to do.
Since my diet approach was (and is) based on reduced calorie intake
along with exercise, I don't limit carrots or fruits at all (I hate
beets :-) ).  I do try to limit fruit juice, as it's fairly
concentrated in sugar and easy for me to overconsume.

I wondered that too.  I don't eat these things too frequently -- just
because I'm not a big fan of most of them, and prefer meat & fish --
but I've never avoided them.

An assortment of reasons that only apply to a few
people or only temporarily.

Religious - Pythagoras refused to eat beans to the
point a rioting mob trapped him against bean
fields and he refused to enter the fields according
to the legend of his death.  I have no idea why
he held the opinion, nor do I think the legend
has rock-solid supporting evidence.  Still, if
some religions forbid pork and other religions
publish recipes for pepperoni, why shouldn't some
folks hold religious objections to legumes?

Indigestion - If you rarely ate legumes before
and then start, it can be hard to digest them.
Temporary problem but folks starting out may as
well take early precautions as long as they know
what is a restriction for early on and what is
a long term restiction.  Gas bloating - same
comment.

Food intolerances - Some people have various
levels of intolerance to various types of legumes.
Consider fatal peanut alergies for example, and
favism from eating improperly cooked fava beans.
Intolerances so mild they can't be detected can
also get worse as we age - A friend recently
noticed she can no longer digest legumes since
she hit 60.  Again, this is a temporary
restriction to avoid problems early on not a
permanent restriction unless you're on a
paleolithic program.

Macronutrient balance theory - Legumes are high
in protein.  If you're already cutting fat and/or
carbs you're already high in dietary protein.
There is no requirement whatsoever to believe or
practice balancing your protein/fat/carb
percentages, but some types of plan suggest it
and if yours does following the directions beats
not following the directions.  There's no harm in
balancing protein/fat/carbs by percentage.

The "lima beans taste bad therefore give them to
Doug" theory - Humorous to some, matter of fact
about their approach to life to others.  What
can I say, more for me.  I'll call it teamwork.

Soak split peas, lentils or white navy beans eight hours, rinsing
several times, discard the water and simmer the beans two hours in
unsalted water. You can then add them to other dishes or use them as
is.

This eliminates the starches that cause gas.

Heh. That was actually mentioned in a BBC programme this week:
Pythagoras thougt that when you fart, part of your soul escapes. And
beans make you fart, so...

Marc....
I would reccomend Cornish Pasties...as well as being low in calories -  they
are very nourishing and practicly Fat free.
Three a day and you will soon lose weight. I would limit yourself to only
half a dozen Chocolait biscuits a day  though - cos although they are low in
calories - they are a bit high in fibre and could cause a bit of a windy
tummy... which can be a bit of an embarressment.

All the best on your diet.

Veggies fruit whole grains and cooked dried beans/peas/lentils.
Ronzoni makes a good whole grain spaghetti.

Easy.. I once ate a can of tuna daily for a couple of years--ended up with
high mercury levels! Not a good thing.  Evidently mercury contamination is
related to the depth in the water that the fish inhabits. I have switched to
salmon & sardines and not as frequently!

Put Tuna (packed in oil) into your tomato sauce and put it over pasta.
You can also put a bottle of clam juice or a can of chopped clams in the
sauce.
Use whole wheat or low carb macaroni.
