i have been traveling for a week and a half and have not only been away
from the food that i'm used to and have readily available, but i've
been dining out almost everyday and picking up snacks while i am on the
go (like really rich tuna salad sandwiches and muffins, for instance).
i am in new york city and it's hard to stick to my diet what with all
the culinary offerings abound.

i am walking quite a bit but find that it's very hard to resist
chocolate from jacques torres and the luscious dinners of veal shank at
the many fantastic restaurants in the city. how in the world do i
follow my diet while on my business trip? do i just chuck it out the
window for two weeks, only to return to it when i return?

Well, clearly it's not impossible to follow a healthy diet when
traveling; you can find healthier choices than those you've been
eating.  The problem is temptation; you're confronted by lots of
things that you find too hard to resist.  No one else can decide for
you whether to stick to your diet or give in to temptation whenever
you wish.  You're making the choice to eat these things.  If you
choose to chuck your diet for two weeks you can, but then you must
deal with the consequence: accept that you're likely to gain some
weight that you'll then have to "re-lose" once you're back home.  You
must decide if that's worth it to you.

My approach in your situation would probably be somewhere in the
middle -- enjoy an occasional restaurant treat but skip fattening
snacks like muffins.  Eat moderately for some meals and indulge for
others  -- and reduce quantities a bit over what you might have eaten
before.  This should minimize weight regain and, perhaps more
importantly, leave you feeling better about yourself at the end of the
trip and more prepared to get back to your usual eating pattern.
