Hi, All:

Anyone else find it too easy to lose and gain wieght?

I was 215 Saturday...now I'm almost 230, due to yummies consumed --
poor yummies!  They were so peaceful in their lovely holiday
packages....

I feel like that kid from the manga "One Pound Gospel," a boxer who
just can't stop eating.  Like him, though, I don't look fat at all, but
I definitely notice it in my movements, whether it's biking up a hill
or jetting up five stories.

What's the most weight you've ever lost in a single day?  I know it can
fluctuate -- and it's mostly water sweated out -- but I'm
curious...this is rather fascinating.

Want to get back down to my prime of ~185-195 lbs.

Sigh!

Wish we had skiing near here (NYC)...not much else to do outdoors in
winter time that's as fun as x-country!  Was skiing only in a tee shirt
for like two hours...that's how much of a workout it can be -- I had
steam coming off me!

'Mostly water' would be an understatement. Not much value in this figure at
all. Talk to a boxer trying to make weight before a fight.

In my experience Daily weight fluctuation is close to meaningless when
trying to gauge weight loss (never mind fat loss).

Its just carb bloat ... overindulging in processed carbs attracts water
...
Eat clean/cut back for a few days and it will all go away (as long as
you stay away from those treats!)

Raining here in the northern Sierra Mtns of CA (Lake Tahoe) but the ski
hills are all open now! Let it snow let it snow let it snow! :-)

Hi Joanne!

You live at Tahoe? One of my goals is to move closer to the Sierras in
a couple of years. I live in SF now.

I skied at Northstar a couple of weeks ago and the snow was really
sucky. I'm sure it's worse now. This is nothing like last year, is it?
We need some good dumpage! Pow now!

Short term weight changes are often misleading.  Charting weight over time
shows the trend and thus gain or loss of fat.  This needs to be a chart in
the range of 4 weeks or more.

Well they have had a bigger weight fluctuation in a few days than I
have had in 18 years. Pretty sad

Yes, but meaningless if it isn't a trend. (so don't be sad about that- its
christmas :) )

No stupid, it's the 22nd, christmas is the 25th.

This is the thing -- is it "inherently" easier to lose weight than gain
it, or vice-versa, or really just equal both ways?

I seem to lose weight easily, but gain it just as easily, so that's
what I'm wondering...I hope to go parachuting next year, and most
outfits have a 225-lb. ceiling, so I'd like to be "safely" below
that...plus, it'd be nice to see if I can get back down to my Glory
Days form of 190!

Though I'm not looking forward to replacing a $5K wardrobe....

Yes, happy holidays, everyone -- best time of year to eat!!!!!!

Weight is too general a term to answer your question.  It's easy to lose
fat and it's easy to put fat back on.  It also easy to lose muscle but
it's very difficult to put muscle back on.

How about walking to/from commuter trains on both ends to get to work during
a strike?  Talk about a fun winter activity!  I don't have to worry about
taking my usual walk after lunch now.  I get more than enough walking in
before and after work.

That's how I've been getting to work!

I commute by bike like three months out of the year, anyway.

Naw, the problem right now is that these holiday goodies are
end-of-the-world-delicious!  My bike-riding barely lets me break even!
That's an hour of moderate-intense (depending on traffic) activity each
way at ~300-600 calories per trip, and I'm still gaining weight!

BTW, y'all should get that strawberry cheesecake at Costco's...it
impressed everyone on the floor!

15 lbs is a substantial weight gain. Does it reflect in your clothes?
It means about 1 extra clothes size, or so.

Could your scale be not working right?

If the scale is working, perhaps the lower GI isn't?

No, I barely look an inch past 190 (my prime)!

Everything fits as before...actually, they even seem to feel a just a
tad bit looser (suits seem roomier in the shoulders, shirts roomier at
the collar...).

I guess I'm gonna just "hold" things at 225-230 for now and enjoy the
end of the year first!

> Could your scale be not working right?

Well, put it this way -- if it's off, it's consistently off.  =)

Seriously, I'm not putting you on, though this sounds so ridiculous I
can't stop chuckling.  That's why I'm posting: I hope someone out there
loses 10 lbs. a day and gains 15 lbs. in three days!  It's always been
like that with me...hope it's not cancer or something!

In a single day?  It involved food poisoning, no doubt.  If you can get it
after a major binge event, that even increases the score.  You spend one day
porking yourself up to an unnaturally inflated weight, then the next 3
crapping and puking it all away.

Likely best to stick to the skiing.

I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I lost four-five pounds this
morning just taking a dump!

Yeah, something really bizzare here.

Sigh...this is one New Year's Resolution I will keep: stop fooling
around with the pastries!

> Likely best to stick to the skiing.

Indeed.  Just not as easy as going into the fridge...same thrills,
really, same excitement and intoxication.

Didn't Jack Palance say something like that, after the host introduced him
at the Oscars a few years ago...

"Billy Crystal.  I crap bigger than him."
