More Incentive to Maintain -- An Image to Uphold

Some of you who've been around for a little while may remember that my
gym chain (Life Time Fitness) magazine was doing a "success story"
article about me -- I put the proof copy up on the web briefly and I
know some of you read it.  Anyway, the article came out in the
December issue, and so now I have people in the gym coming up to me to
talk about it.  (My gym has even put a big blow-up poster of the
article in the entryway.)  So I kind of feel like I have to maintain
my weight after all this hoopla :-).

And related to this, but much more important to me, is something I
heard yesterday.  My trainer Tom, who cheered me on through all this
but who has since been promoted and transferred to Minnesota -- and
who's mentioned prominently and pictured in the article -- called me
to wish me a merry Christmas.  He told me that he's really excited
about a Christmas present from his fiancee -- she's arranged to have
the article professionally framed for him.  Now that he's managing all
the PT business and no longer working as a trainer himself, he says he
wants this on his wall as a certificate of achievement for his career
as a trainer.  I love Tom like a son, and it means so much to me that
this is so important to him.  So I can't let him down and go back to
where I was.

Mostly I'm sharing all this because perhaps it might give someone else
some helpful ways to think about why they want to achieve and maintain
a healthy weight and a fit lifestyle.

Tom's Christmas present sounds great.

I still keep a before/after picture in my office to remind me what happens
if I quit paying attention to the diet and exercise.  Many of my friends
(especially the biking group) and co-workers never saw me when I weighed
177.  Many have asked if that's really me in the before pic<G>

I quit smoking and lost the weight for health reasons and I feel I would be
cheating myself if I didn't maintain the weight loss.  After all it would be
much harder to ride that bike with the additional weight!

Beverly - who's hoping the nice weather sticks around a few more days so I
can take the bike out for a ride....

I am hoping the weather sticks around for a while as well.   I am not
doing well on my diet during the holidays, but I am continuing my
exercise.  I think I would have gained 25 lbs if I had not been
faithful to my routine.  Riding my bike is becoming something I do less
and less now that winter is upon us in Jersey.   I get out when I can.
Most of the time I am with my trainer.  I have a reason to lose weight
and I have to do it.  I can't be a fatty in my daughters wedding
pictures.  Plus I have my eye on this really great mother of the bride
dress.   Christmas was a non stop eating event....and I am partying
twice for the New Year.  One party on New Years Eve and one big buffet
on New Years Day.  If I can make it through that....I will be happy.
It is a real test to try to diet during the holidays.  Especially when
everyone is pushing food at you.   I'm really glad the holidays are
over.  My will power is very weak.  Or the food is just too good.  I am
not sure.  My husbands family is 100 percent Italian....and boy they
can cook and they can eat.  And they enjoy it too.  All I can say for
myself is...I made it through the holidays without gaining.   I didn't
lose, but I didn't gain.   That was due to the exercise, not my will
power when it comes to great food. ;-)   Because I love food.  There is
something very difficult about choosing a carrot stick over a
cannoli......  I am just grateful I kept up my exercise to burn the
calories off.

Modest too.  More still to emulate.

Are you making fun of me because I seem to be bragging about the
article?  I hesitate to even show it to friends because it seems like
bragging.  But I'm interested in understanding how I can keep
motivated to maintain my weight and my healthy lifestyle, and for me a
big component of it is not wanting to let Tom down.  And I thought
that mentioning it might give someone else a useful idea for how they
might find motivation to lose and/or maintain.  I'm sorry if it
appeared self-centered.

I think it's wonderful. I want to be like you, Chris, when I grow up. :

Thanks :-).  Now that my retirement date is only 6 months away, I'm
trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :-).

Don't sweat it.  You're sincerely one of the least self-centered people I've
ever met (or read here).  I took your post as a way of explaining some of
your motivation to continue on. You should be darn proud of that article.  I
know I was when I showed it to all of my friends and my trainer and was able
to tell them "this is my friend Chris!"

What's wrong Greg?  Boyfriend dump you again?  Must be why you're back
trolling here.

Nope.  Your greatest pride is that a person who helped you through
it uses it as a sign of career acheivement.  Serious major league
modesty.

You could put it up on a flag pole and I wouldn't see that as self
centered, but you're so modest you're wroried about me calling
you modest.

It just seems obvious to me.  He helped me more than I can ever
possibly thank him for, and I'm so glad that this means this much to
him.  I know I did all the actual diet and exercise and stuff, but
having someone who was just there for me cheering me on and taking so
much obvious delight in every success just made all the difference in
the world for me.  I know many people can find motivation solely from
within, but I think this was really necessary for me.

I'm sorry :-).  I'm probably over-sensitive to this, but it does seem
kind of like bragging or showing off.  Having that big poster in the
entrance to the gym is really very strange.  I find myself wanting to
kind of sneak past it when I come in :-).
