Yesterday I finished 300 days since starting my diet last June 3rd. That's
300 days without going off my diet even one time!

This morning's weight was 93.8 kg (down 0.8 kg / 1.8 lb from last week) -
which is a total so far of minus 31.2 kg = minus 68.6 lb.

I'll do my usual weekly report tomorrow, on Friday, but just wanted to note
the 300 day milestone. Especially if the scale ticks up again tomorrow like
it seems to every Friday morning lately! :)

AMAZING!  Do you realize how cool that is!! Well I am sure that your
body does!
I probably started about the same time but haven't had quite your level
of success but hoping to kick it up a notch here soon. I think I have
probably had more good food days than bad food days and that alone is a
miracle.

So how bout a few 'secrets of your success'?  What do you think really
help you come so far??

More good days than bad is an accomplishment in itself. Congratulations!

For me it's always all one or the other. In the past, falling off the wagon
meant it was gone, over, done with.... I've never been the type who can
"just go off my diet for one day". It would definitely creep into multiple
days, then weeks, then months then 10 years from now you would see notes
from me saying how I'm going to start my diet again. :)

This diet was a birthday present to myself on my 49th birthday. I wanted to
get down to a normal weight, if not full goal, before I turned 50!

Note that I intentionally did not start the day *after* my birthday so I
could splurge on my birthday. I intentionally started on my birthday to
reinforce the idea that eating healthy has to become a new way of life and
that while each year is riddled with special occasions the way of dealing
with all the occasions is the same - find a way to enjoy them without
overeating.

I do have some days where it is easier than other days. Some days it seems
like the day goes by quickly and I haven't eaten that much and I don't
really think about food so much. Other days I just get the munchies and
can't stop eating. When that happens I just make sure to snack out on low
calorie things - fat-free 100 calorie bags of popcorn, fruits, some very
thin slices of ham (just 100 calories a pack), some edamame, etc. Eventually
my hunger comes under control again. If you are truly hungry it is always
best to eat something rather than letting your hunger grow into a KFC
attack. :)

Doing a few hundred calories per day of some regular exercise also helps.

Somehow I just needed to get out of a certain "gluttony mindset" that I've
always been in and try to get used to being satisfied with "normal human
portions". I do find that if I wait long enough after eating a
normally-sized meal that I do, in fact, get satisfied. I try to keep that in
mind.

I know a lot of June people... One other person I work with is also June 3.
Two of my best friends in Japan are June 16 and June 30.

Of course they are all thin, so there is no relevant pattern here. :)

Thanks so much for the insights! I have found that if I take that first
'bad' bite of whatever that chances are I am off and running into diet
disaster. You are a huge inspiration for me and I certainly appreciate
all your posts. I will have to keep you in mind on any trips as that is
a tough time for me. I am still vunerable to the 'special occasions'
moments and the ever evil 'this will make me feel better and solve all
my problems if I eat it' urges.

One thing I used to remember during my many (many!) start-and-stop attempts
to get rolling on a diet (before I found the right combination that clicked
for me)... I could just tell on a certain day whether I would be able to
stick with it or not.

Like 3 or 4 in the afternoon, something would just happen in my head and I
*knew* the diet was gone for the day - and thus probably for days and days
after that.

It is hard to describe. You wake up with the best of intentions, you get
through breakfast and lunch just fine.

But then the afternoon drags on and you are faced with the long night ahead
of you and there are just so many things you want to gorge on that it is
just too much to resist and you cave it. Even though you KNOW it will make
you feel bad afterwards!

Yet on other days you realize that somehow you will make it through the day
just fine.

I think one thing that has helped this time is recognizing the "danger time"
of the day for me - which seems to be from 3pm to 5pm. If I can get through
that time without carrying over cravings into the evening, I am somehow fine
for the rest of the day.

So I always, always, always, have low-calorie snacks ready for this time of
the day and will very often splurge on 300-500 calories between 3 and 5 pm
just to quiet down my cravings.

If I do that, I am very satisfied with a low calorie dinner later on and
things do calm down...

In other words, rather than even trying to use excessive will-power I try to
avoid having to deal with it by eating something!

Were that it was not so. But they are all over the place here. <sigh>

How old are you, Eddie? And where do you live?

One nice thing about text messaging like this (and I know there are bad
things too!) is that you can communicate directly with a person, without
preconceptions based on things like age, race and weight to filter through.
Even sex. I thought Chris was a guy for a long time. :)

For example, I can see your weight is 294 lb, which is, objectively speaking
quite large (though you have lost an enormous amount so far). But your
messages don't sound like they are from an obese person. They sound like
they are from an active, healthy, enthusiastic, young person. In other
words, I am hearing from the inner Eddie - and the one you are shaping up
into! :)

Congratulations Doug.  Your steady progress is really impressive

I've managed over 200 days on at least 3 occasions in recent years,
but every time something has happened to cause me to fall off the
wagon, and then I just can't get back on.

Are you finding it easier the longer you stick with it?  I've not
found this to be the case for myself, although I've often seen it said
by others.

Keep up the good work!
