Results: Skipped my workout today. Worked out in the pasture with my
horses instead. I'm sure that counts for something but I have no idea
what!!

Pat,
That's such an interesting coincidence. After driving my back woods roads
for over a decade, just last week I came around a blind turn and on the
opposite side of the road was a woman on a horse. I instantly slowed down
to observe. That was a shock to the eyes. I could only smile in
appreciation for the simpler times when folks travelled in that fashion
every day.
Guess I just forgot the way things used to be.
I'd love to get back in the saddle (since age 9, at YMCA summer camp).

Andy,
I'm back in the saddle after a 33 yr break. The horses we have now are
gaited, not quite the horse I had when I was 17, but lots of fun and no
bounce!!

That would be 600 calories an hour and there are very few types of work or
exercise that will burn that many calories.

Hi Beverly
Next time you go to the gym you will see that nearly all the exercise
machines calorie burn out work out at approx 10 cals a minute, obviously
standing or sitting still is going to lower this considerably. Consideration
should also be given to your size, obviously the larger you are the more
calories you will burn.
Hope this helps, unless you know better ;-)

Hi Beverly
Take a look at this, http://www.fitnessonline.com/tools/calories/ even just
standing or sitting still burns 131 calories an hour for me at 207 lbs.
Walking at 4.5 mph which is not strenuous burns off just over 600 calories.
Walking at 3 mph which is the average walking speed results in burning 441
calories in an hour.
Jogging at 5.5 mph which is not fast burns up an amzing 1021 calories.
Exercise is good huh????

There are exercises that will burn 600+ an hour. I bike @ 14mph for one
hour and burn 1,250 calories. My answer was to your original question that
any type of work burns 10 calories per minute. Working with weights or low
impact aerobics only burns in the vicinity of 400 calories per hour so this
falls below the 10 calories per minute. There are probably more types of
exercise that fall in this range than the higher range. I just don't want
people to think that everything burns 10 calories per minute.
