This was a pretty good diet week, with the usual daily fluctuations, but
hovering near new lows almost every day, and ending up with a nice loss for
the week.

This week I lost 0.6 kg = 1.3 lb. Since my average daily calories came to
1484 calories/day (just a tad less than last week) this means my CPP
(calories per pound per day needed to maintain weight) was 11.4, which is
somewhat higher than normal.

My "rolling 4 week average" improved to 1.2 lb/week.

My latest weekly weight loss graph is up at
http://lerner.net/diet/weight20060728.jpg

The latest stats:

* Week 60 / Day 420
* This week's loss: 0.6 kg = 1.3 lb
* Weight (kg): 125.0 -> 85.6 (minus 39.4 kg)
* Weight (lb): 275.0 -> 188.3 (minus 86.7 lb)
* BMI: 41.3 -> 28.3
* Percent body mass lost: 31.5%
* Percent complete to goal: 86%

The next "mini goal" I'm looking forward to is the bragging rights that go
with saying I've lost an even 40 kg. :)

Doug, that's totally awesome!!! you're so inspiring..........I to had a much
better week, but I'm not sure if the results are going to be realized when I
go for my WI tomorrow.........oh well, at least I can say that I ate really
healthy this week and I'm feeling much better about things in
general........I also got back to the gym which I think has helped my mental
state as well......

WOW, 13.3 more pounds and you will have lost over 100 lbs dude!!!!!!! Truly
an amazing feat!

Eddie, if you are (1) eating healthy and (2) going to the gym you can't go
wrong over the long run (even if there might be a fluctuation in any given
WI)!

Wonderful!  :o)  You're doing fine.  But how do you figure out your CPP?  I
haven't lost an ounce in the last 9 days and am getting discouraged since I
am exercising and haven't cheated one time (gone over points).

Since I know what I weigh and how much my weight changed over the week I
know my "caloric shortfall" using the 1 lb = 3500 calories value.

Here is the equation I use:

(L * 3500 / 7 + C) / W

where L = my week's weight change in lb, C = my average daily net calorie
intake and W = my current weight in lb.

This week, for example, it was

(1.3 * 3500 / 7 + 1484) / 188.3

Thanks Doug, I'm not sure I understand this.  You lose 1 lb which equals
3500 calories....  I hope my husband can understand this.  I'm really poor

Yes - to lose 1 lb in a week you need to eat 3500 fewer calories over the
week than your body needs to maintain its current weight.

Thanks...  I knew to lose a lb one had to shed 3500 calories, one way or the
other.  But how does one figure out how many calories maintains them?

Points are not really accurate as far as calories go.  Another problem is an
apple is 1 pt (about 80 calories) but some apples are a lot larger than
other apples.  How do you adjust that for points or calories?  80 for a
regular apple and maybe 100 for a large one?

How many *calories* would I need to eat a day to lose weight at 5' 6" and
161 lbs?  I would much rather count calories than points.  I have no idea
how many calories a day I was consuming to maintain for those months.  Off
all diets my weight varied from 165 to 170, up and down.  But now I'm
hellbent on getting rid of these last 30 lbs.  :o)

  I think the best way is trial and error.  Eat a certain amount, know
what that certain amount really is, and see if you gain, lose, or stay
the say.  Next week, adjust accordingly.  It isn't going to be really
consistent though, since if you change your activity your needs will
also change.  Also, many women gain or lose weight according to the time
they are in on they menstrual cycle.  Just before my period, I will
typically gain 2-3 pounds.  It makes it hard to judge where I truly am
on any particular week.

  Invest in a food scale.  I have an electronic one I bought at Walmart
for not too much money.  It's very easy to use, and great for teaching
portion control.  Oh, so *that's* what an ounce and half of cereal looks
like!  You might be surprised as I was as to how many servings of stuff
one can pile into a bowl or onto a plate and think that is is a
reasonable amount.  And it will make it much easier to get an idea of
how many calories you really are eating.

Thanks... I've been going over my WW notes/journal for the past month.

Thanks.  I'm post meno so don't have the water gain anymore.  :o)   I was on
20 to 27 pts a day.  I'm not sure how many calories are in a pt.  It appears
to be about 80 to 100.  When I stuck to 25 to 27 I stopped losing for 9 days
so dropped down to 22 to 24 and dropped a lb.  So I'm assuming I'm now on
around 2,050 to 2,150c a day.  To get rid of the hunger I'm adding more
protein and less carbs.  Carbs do not fill me up or keep hunger at bay.  For
lunch today for example I had 10pts worth of lean roast pork and ice water.
For dinner I'll be having a 5pt WW Smart-Ones dinner of Salisbury steak.  I
didn't want the fruit this afternoon so skipped it.  As long as I lose at
least 1 lb a week I'll stay on 22 to 24 pts.  If I hit another stall I'll
drop them again.

Oh wow!!!  I didn't know they had them.  :o)))  I'll ask next week when we
go shopping.  I'm using an old office mail scale that is pitiful.

I agree with you completely.  I have no idea how I stayed so slender all my
life with the amounts of food I consumed (pre menopause/w thyroid failure).

Lee,

I thought the same thing in reading her posts.  She has said she is 5'6"
tall and currently at 160, looking to get to 130.  For her age and height,
she should be according too WW guidelines between 124-155.  I know
personally, I am 5'6" and 46 years of age and would be happy at the high end
of the range and it would be much easier to maintain than the lower end of
the range.  Sometimes that low end is too low, especially as you age.

For my health's sake my NP want me to try to reach and stay around 130lbs.
This is to help prevent strokes, high BP, heart disease and diabetes which
run in my family.  None of which I have and we hope to prevent these health
issues as I age.

I will no lose to the point of getting gaunt and sick looking.  :o)  I've
seen some woman my age who lost so much weight  they look haggard and worn

Lee, I am 62 years old but am active, healthy and don't look that old.  My
mature weight pre-menopause/hypothyroidism was somewhere between 115 in the
summer and 125 or so in the winter.  I'm 5' 6½" tall.  My NP says my ideal
weight would be around 125 to 130 for my age and bone structure.  With this
excess 30lbs I can't wear the kind of cloths I like.  Nothing fits me right.
I'm shapeless.  I don't like the "cottage cheese" on my belly and thighs.
I'm too embarrassed to wear a bathing suit and go swimming.  I refuse to
wear my sexy underthings.  And most of all I despise the way I look with
these 30lbs....   :o(

Once I reach 130lbs I'll reevaluate and see where I look and feel the best.

That would be good - or just weigh the apple and look up the actual calories
at http://calorieking.com.

To be honest, I don't think your weight loss is going to be affected one way
or the other (no pun intended) by the size of your apples. I try to be good
about journaling everything, but I don't worry about whether my apples are
80 or 100 and would probably just count them all as 80 and feel like I was
"beating the system" a little bit. :)

You can take your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and multiply by 1.2, if you are
a typically sedentary person, to calculate the number of calories you need
to maintain any given weight.

You say you are 161 lb. I would always calculate this based on your GOAL
weight rather than your current weight. Say 161 lb is your goal weight and
you are a 40 year old woman, go to
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and enter the numbers in the
form.

Putting in the numbers above for you, the calculator gives 1478 calories
(rounded off). Multiplying by 1.2 gives 1774 calories. Say 1800 calories to
not be fanatic about it.

So if you ate about 1800 calories per day on the average you will eventually
get to and maintain 161 lb. You can enter a lower weight if you want to be
at a lower weight.

If the number was 1800, I recommend making it 1650 per day and then
allocating the other 1050 as "bonus calories" (like Weight Watchers free
points) which can be used on days when you need a little bit more to eat or
want to splurge without going off your diet. I find that keeping some
calories on the side like that really helps avoid the psychological pressure
of having to deal with a rigid daily limit you can never exceed.

I got 1239.3 using the calc' above for age 62 and 130 lbs (my goal weigt).

I then get around 1486.8, say 1487 calories that I assume would be to
maintain a weight of 130 lbs - my goal weight.

So to lose the 30 excess lbs I should be eating about 1200c a day?  Remember
now, I am very bad in math. :0(   Honestly, I would rather count calories

It is a very good reference. I also recommend their pocket-sized book. It
has extensive listings useful when shopping, plus almost all the fast food
places.

Say 1500 calories. It is only 13 calories different and sounds a lot better.

If you got 1500 calories above, then deducting about 1000 to set aside for a
bonus would give you 1400 calories/day not 1200. Much better! :)

Also here is the cool thing - if you do exercise (fast walking, exercise
bike, etc.) you can deduct those exercise calories from what you eat so you
can eat more and still lose weight!

Shirley

* Week 60 / Day 420
* This week's loss: 0.6 kg = 1.3 lb
* Weight (kg): 125.0 -> 85.6 (minus 39.4 kg)
* Weight (lb): 275.0 -> 188.3 (minus 86.7 lb)
* BMI: 41.3 -> 28.3
* Percent body mass lost: 31.5%
* Percent complete to goal: 86%

The next "mini goal" I'm looking forward to is the bragging rights that go
with saying I've lost an even 40 kg. :)
