We got ourselves a treadmill (Precor, a local purchase bought on eBay).

I set up a steel angle to be a bracket for the laptop, so that we can
combine walking on it with actually doing stuff on the computer. I set
it to 10% incline and a friendly pace.  That's actually very nice and
does not feel like a waste of time and is not boring.

Whatever works for you.  It's good that you are looking for ways to keep
your family active.  Personally, if I'm not achieving a sweat, it's not
really exercise.  I laugh when I see the women reading their novels while
doing the stairclimber in the gym.  How do they do that?  With the heavy
breathing and sweat in my eyes, I sure couldn't!

Admittedly, I sweat very easily (helps during hot days), but walking
at 10% incline does make me sweat after a little while. I walk at a
modest pace, so I can read the computer screen, but because the the
incline, I still spend enough energy to sweat.

It sure  beats reading on the couch..

The time you spent looking at people and judging them, you aren't working
out much either..

That's the way I see it, also, maybe it is not the heaviest exercise,
but it is better than just sitting in front of the computer...

If you are referring to ME judging someone, up yours.  My comment was very
light hearted, and I DO think it's funny to see people trying to read a book
or magazine on the stairclimber, because I don't know how they can focus on
the words.

But I shouldn't have had to justify my comment.  I did congratulate him on
finding ways to keep physically active.

I did not feel slighted by your original comment.

I know it's hard to pick up on the "tone" of a post...  you can't hear
someone's voice or read their expressions.  I try to be positive though -
I'm not here to put anyone down.

Your not knowing how they focus means you don't know,
not that they can't.  Abilities vary.  For that matter, the
amount of concentration needed varies.  It takes a lot less
focus to read a novel or magazine than a college textbook
or peer reviewed professional journal.

As much work reading I need to do and as little time as I
have to do pleasure reading, I'll take whatever chance I can
get to mix in some pleasure reading.  If I can only manage
a page or two while doing the machine and that's my only
chance to pleasure read that day, I'll take it no matter how
much I'd prefer a better reading environment.

But I also won't read a college textbook or peer reviewed
professional journal because those for me do take more
focus than I can muster while on a machine.

Better IMO - I see folks with iPod buds in their ears.  I have
leanred how to download books on tape or to rip spoken
audiobooks from CD.  Load on iPod and away you go ...

My DH does this.  Mostly, though, he listens to podcasts from NPR and
such that he downloads.  Myself, I prefer music when I exercise.
(Though I often listen to classical and folk and stuff, not just the
up-tempo sort of thing usually associated with exercise.  I tend to
put a half-dozen or so albums on my iPod, listen to the tracks on
random until I've heard everything, then replace them with others.  My
current load includes the newest albums from Beyonce, Justin
Timberlake, Bob Dylan, and Linda Ronstadt, a greatest hits album from
Shania Twain, Daniel Rodriguez singing hymns, and a Taylor Hicks
2-song mini-album.)

Sorry to hear that Willow...

That's the reason why the seller sold it to me, she did not have space
for it in her new condo...

Litterally I'd have to give up my home office for it.

The gym is close by though, and honestly, once I'm there, I do a lot better
on my workouts. I don't have the dog licking my face, the cat yodeling,
phone ringing.. you get the picture.

I have a similar picture with kids etc, though it gets better once
they go to bed.

The advantage of kids over pets is that at some point they go to bed..

Grace and Gaya just won't let me get out of their sight EVER

maybe I spoil them too much.

I take it your second child has arrived by now, then?  I don't
remember hearing, but anyway, congratulations!  Boy or girl?

Thank you Chris, it is a boy. He is actually rather mild in
behavior. He is 9 months by now.

I don't know why I missed this earlier -- or perhaps I just forgot.  I
saw a later post that referred to him so I felt sort of stupid that
I'd asked :-).

I am afraid that I might have neglected to make a proper announcement...
