I am within 4 lbs of my goal weight. The last time I weighed 125, I could
wear size 4-6 pants. Currently, I can wear a size 8 in some things, while
some size 10's are still too tight - especially jeans. It seems I no longer
have a waist...; ( Not that I was some hourglass before, I've always been
somewhat un-curvy. But at this point, I am down to 35.5" hips, and a 29"
waist. The hip measurement falls unde size 4-6 on the size charts, but my
waist is a 10-12! How in the world do I find pants that fit me! If I buy
pants that fit my waist, the hips are way too big. Oh, and to make matters
worse, I'm short. Everything needs to be "petite", and even some of that
stuff is too long.
I guess I'll just call my tailor and have him make me some new
clothes....not.

Well, people are proportioned all differently...but from personal
experience, I can tell you that if you lose more weight, your
proportions will fall more in line. If you don't want to lose more
weight, just shop around a little more. Some companies, like Faded
Glory which Walmart sells (for men anyway) are very generous in the
hips. You can buy the pants with the adjustable waists too.
I used to be fat, but my weight was mostly in the lower portion,
meaning I could not buy a suit because if the slacks were correct, the
jacket would be too big. That's how I first noticed my proportion
difference. As I lost weight (85 pounds), my proportions are now in
line with what the clothing companies sell. Unfortunately, I have to
buy my clothes in the boys section because I wear size 28 waist...then
have a problem finding pants long enough (32 in.), but do manage to
find them usually on sale at that because what goes on sale usually is
the XXL or small sizes at least at Walmart or Kohls where I shop for
clothes. The other problem for me is of course the styles for boys are
not often what I would normally wear, but even there some companies
make mens and boys clothes very similar in style. Right now I am
wearing Dickies jeans that were size 18 in boys but perhaps by mistake
were made in length 32 in. and they fit perfectly. They were on sale
for $4 at Kohls.
I see people who are often way overweight and they occasionally seem to
have clothes that fit reasonably well, but I have no idea where and how
they find them. If I had a problem finding clothes that fit, I would
approach someone who had my similar proportions and was a good dresser
and find out where they bought their clothes though. PS: My solution
for not finding a suit that fit was simple back a few years ago....I
just never wore one. Now that I'm retired, I'll never wear a monkey
suit and find almost nobody else does.
Strange how styles change. When I was a kid, everyone wore their shirts
inside their pants with a belt. Mine would not stay, so I wore it in.
Now, that I am older, I often wear my shirt inside where it stays just
fine now, and as I look around, I am the only man who does. Most
everyone else wears their shirts out with no belt. LOL dkw

First of all, congrats on your progress--you've come a way since getting
back on track!
Second, try pilates (if you aren't already). It really does help to
strengthen your back and ab muscles and flatten that tummy area. When I
was going 3x a week a couple of winters ago, my belly was sucked in and
I was standing straighter. I quit going because of all the school/kid
stuff I needed to do after work and started slouching and sagging again.
Now that I'm back to it 2x a week, I'm already seeing a difference.
I have never been an hourglass either--short, no waist, no butt, broad
shoulders--I look like a wedge! But pilates really does help create a
stronger core and flatter belly. Really.
Good luck, and stick with whatever you're doing. You'll be where you
want to be in no time at all.

Are you suggesting that? Because of the waist issue? That's a thought...

I've never had a waist :( I've found that the jeans and pants with the
waist that sits below the regular waist line fit best. I have several pair
of Crazy Horse (Liz Claiborne) that I love. If I buy anything to fit around
the waist it's too big through the hip area.

I'm just the opposite. Every single pair of trousers or skirt I ever
buy has to have huge tucks taken in the waist, which is currently
around 12 inches less than my hips. Although the ratio narrows when I
weigh less the difference always makes finding clothes that fit quite
difficult.

That's what I do, I don't have hips really, never had any even when too
skinny. I buy a lot of men's pants.

You know, maybe you're onto something with the tailor idea. As in,
maybe some
kinds of pants can be taken in a bit in the hip area. Just a thought.

If you are buying jeans, try the "midrise" I am petite with the same
problem at the waistline and this works very well for me

I went to "Old Navy" last weekend to try to buy some pants and all they
have are pants that definitely do not come up to the waist. It seems
to me that they are several inches below the belly button. I think
that solves the problem of a large waist. I actually didnt like the
idea of my too-large-waist just sitting out there by itself so I didnt
buy them but it might solve your issues. Are they called hip-huggers?
I dont know. They are very very low slung.

They're called low rise :-). If you look at the labels you will see
some that say things like "ultra low rise" or "moderate low rise". At
Old Navy, everything is probably somewhat low. At other stores you
can find things slightly below the waist but not a lot. This is
generally my favorite, but I do wear some of the lower ones too (with
a top covering the belly, of course :-) ).

My translation - A belt will do fine and you don't need suspenders.

I have very short legs for my height. When my wife and I sit next to
each
other we are eye to eye but standing she's 3 inches taller. When I buy
pants I don't even bother to check the length. There's no such thing
in
any store as pants with legs short enough for me. Not a problem - When
I buy new pants I wash them a copy of times to shrink them, then mark
them to length and have them cut and hemmed. This may be a custom
change but it costs much less than fully custom fitted clothes.
How many folks think fully custom fitted clothes are worth it? Three
times
over the years I've gotten custom shirts and even though they've cost
3 times what I could pay off the rack they lasted more than twice as
long
as off the rack. It borders on worth doing it again. But for pants
all I need
to do is get ones that fit my waist, cut off the bottom several feet
(chuckle)
and have them rehemmed. No need for custom pants for me.
